TORONTO, Jan 12 (LSN) – Speaking at the annual Senator Keith Davey Lecture for liberals, author and historian Michael Ignatieff warned liberals to address the charge that liberal values embraced in the 1960’s were the cause of Canada’s massive family breakdown. Ignatieff noted Canada has one of the highest divorce rates in the world and divorces have increased fivefold in Canada since the mid-1960’s. Although Ignatieff denied the responsibility was due to liberal values, he urged liberals to attack the “conservatives” who were spreading this message since “Nothing has done the electoral and moral credibility of liberal political argument more harm than the failure to take this attack seriously”.
