MADRID, March 2, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Spain’s ruling Popular Party (PP) has proposed allowing legally recognized homosexual civil unions, giving homosexual couples all the benefits of marriage except adoption of children. The new law would allow recognition of civil unions for homosexuals with a simple contract akin to a marriage license. The proposal comes just as the country is about to vote in the March 14 elections with recent polls showing the Popular Party leading the Socialists by nine per cent.
In response to the anti-family initiative, the Spanish pro-family group PROFAM said that PP has lost the support of Spanish families. The group is encouraging families to lobby their prospective political representatives on the issue.
The news may not come as a surprise to LifeSiteNews.com readers who learned last year that when Sweden announced that its foreign embassies could perform homosexual ‘partnership’ ceremonies Spain wrote to say it had no objection.
This latest action will add to the country’s moral and demographic plunge. Despite a devastatingly low birth rate threatening its pension system, the country encouraged more abortion by legalizing the abortifacient morning-after-pill in 2001. Last year Spain approved destructive research on human embryos with embryonic stem cell research.
