MADRID, January 3, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Spain’s Socialist-led cabinet approved a same-sex “marriage” bill Friday, moving the largely Catholic country one step closer to its full legalization.

The measure would enshrine rights to “married” same-sex couples normally reserved for heterosexual spouses, such as the adoption of children, pension benefits and inheritance rights.

Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, besides pushing to legalize same-sex “marriage,” has already legalized embryonic stem cell research, while also proposing easier access to abortion.

Zapatero’s government has also proposed eliminating mandatory Christian religion classes, while at the same time introducing courses on Muslim religion into high school curricula.
