(LifeSiteNews) — Pro-abortion Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams on Wednesday floated a grotesque solution to America’s ongoing inflation woes: Families worried about soaring gas prices and expensive grocery bills, she suggested, can simply kill their preborn babies to cut back on household costs.

Abrams, who’s running for governor in Georgia against incumbent Brian Kemp after previously losing the 2018 gubernatorial challenge, made the comments in an interview with MSNBC contributor Mike Barnicle on the station’s “Morning Joe” program.

Responding to Barnicle’s observation that abortion as a political issue fails to motivate voters as much as problems like inflation and the high cost of living, Abrams argued that “having children is why you’re worried about your price for gas, it’s why you’re concerned about how much food costs.”

“For women, this is not a reductive issue,” she said. “You can’t divorce being forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy from the economic realities of having a child.”

Abrams went on to suggest that “it’s important for us to have both-and conversations,” adding that as governor she could also help address the cost of housing and education.

Continuing to frame abortion within an economic context, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee told listeners that “women, half the population, especially those of child-bearing age, they understand that having a child is absolutely an economic issue.”

According to Abrams, “only politicians” see abortion as “only another cultural conversation.”

“It is a real biological, economic, imperative conversation that women need to have,” she said.

Abrams, who has frequently claimed she won the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race despite losing to Kemp, immediately drew sharp backlash on social media for seeming to suggest that American families could alleviate their financial difficulties by killing their preborn babies.

Twitter users condemned the comments as “evil” and “despicable,” with one remarking that “I know she believes this but I honestly can’t believe she’s saying it out loud.”

Public SQ founder Michael Seifert suggested that Abrams “should never have power over anything” if she believes that “the solution to Democrats making life more expensive is just to kill more unborn babies.”

Catholic Daily Wire podcaster Michael Knowles simply called the remarks “sick.”

“Stacey Abrams just said more abortions will help solve the inflation problem. You can’t make this up,” Radio host Dan O’Donnell remarked.

This isn’t the first time Abrams has sparked backlash for her remarks about abortion.

Last month, she claimed that six-week fetal heartbeats, which have inspired many pro-life laws to protect babies after the development of cardiac activity, are artificially “manufactured” so that men can control women.

“There is no such thing as a heartbeat at six weeks,” said Abrams, who has been calling heartbeat-based abortion bans “evil” since 2019.

“It is a manufactured sound designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman’s body,” Abrams claimed, despite the fact that top mainstream medical authorities, including Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, have long affirmed that a preborn baby’s heart begins to beat as early as the fifth or sixth week of gestation.

Meanwhile, The Federalist pointed out that Abrams’ comment comes on the heels of a recent Yahoo! Finance piece that suggested that pro-life pregnancy centers (which provide resources like strollers, diapers, and baby formula) weren’t in fact helping American moms deal with America’s ongoing diaper shortage.

The article concluded with a quote from Equity Forward director Ashley Underwood, who suggested that instead of sending money to pro-life pregnancy resource centers which she said use the funding simply to promote so-called “propaganda” opposing abortion, women should be supported in both “parenting” and choosing to kill their preborn babies.
