CLEARWATER, Florida, October 4, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) — The head of the local Democratic Party is infuriated over U.S. citizens being registered to vote.

Susan McGrath, Pinellas Democratic Party president and leader of the “Stonewall Democrats,” objected to who is being registered to vote and the location of the voter registration drive at nine Chick-fil-A restaurants.

McGrath took issue with Pinellas County Board of Elections Supervisor Deborah Clark, who chose to locate one of 350 community voter registration drives at the popular restaurant chain.

Chick-fil-A received criticism from gay activists in 2012 when COO Dan Cathy, speaking off the cuff as a guest on the Ken Coleman radio talk show, commented, “I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say, 'We know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage.' I pray God's mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

In a later interview, Cathy said, speaking of Chick-fil-A, “We are very much supportive of the family — the biblical definition of the family unit. … We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles.”

The LGBTQ backlash was immediate from mainstream media, mayors, and student activists on college campuses. But a “major” nationwide homosexual “Kiss-Off” protest, billed as “The Greatest Protest since Occupy Wall Street,” died out quickly.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee started a “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” which was overwhelmingly successful, resulting in record-breaking sales. A consulting firm concluded that franchises had an upsurge in sales by 30 percent and gained hundreds more customers.

Nevertheless, gay activists and liberal media and politicians have since labeled Chick-fil-A an “LGBTQ bigot business.”

Hence, McGrath's wrath over voter registration at the restaurant. She said that's like a Democratic elections supervisor setting up voter registrations at Planned Parenthood.

In her protest letter to Clark, McGrath wrote, “The coordination of Pinellas voter registration activities with this right-leaning business very clearly conveys that your office is targeting Republican-leaning voters.”

Critics say McGrath's conclusion only proves that Democrats' voter registration drives, which overwhelmingly are in party-majority districts, have been targeting potential Democratic-leaning voters for decades.

“The 'Stonewall Democrats' in Florida seem to be behind the times,” Family Research Council Senior Fellow Peter Sprigg told LifeSiteNews. “The height of the controversy over Chick-fil-A was over four years ago, and apparently they missed the articles that appeared in 2014 reporting on how the chicken chain and its CEO, Dan Cathy, have publicly abandoned conservative activism (their involvement in which was exaggerated to begin with).”

“In fact, in a USA Today article, Dan Cathy was praised by Shane Windmeyer, executive director of Campus Pride — the group that originally attacked Chick-fil-A,” Spriggs pointed out. “One past critic has even become an unlikely fan.”

Indeed, “Dan and I have an ongoing friendship,” Windmeyer said.  “I am appreciative for the common ground we have established in treating all people with dignity and respect — including LGBT people.”

Sprigg summarized that the Chick-fil-A controversy is yesterday's news. “In 2016, most people who come to Chick-fil-A come for the chicken, and the only people avoiding it for political reasons are a handful of LGBT activists with long memories but outdated information,” Sprigg continued. “I see no reason why the county shouldn’t register voters there — especially since maximizing participation in the political process has historically been a liberal ideal.”
