Cynical Researchers Surprised by Results

WASHINGTON, Jan 4, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A new study to be published in this month’s edition of the American Journal of Sociology has found that having youth pledge to remain virgins until marriage is successful. Dr. Peter Bearman and Dr. Hannah Bruckner of the University of North Carolina (UNC) found in their study that teens promising to remain chaste until marriage were on average waiting up to 18 months longer than their peers before having sex.

The National Post reports that UNC Professor J. Richard Udry who helped design the survey admitted “We put the question in the original questionnaire with a smile. . . We were cynical about the likelihood that the pledge would produce [significant results]. But we were wrong.”
