OTTAWA, Nov 18 (LSN) – Official Opposition Children and Families critic Eric Lowther,  MP has called for public submissions to support his initiative for a public review of Canada’s five year report to the United Nations, on Canada’s compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.  An alert bulletin asked concerned pro-family citizens to voice their opinions on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The alert asked:  Do you support the call for a public vetting of Canada’s reporting process?  Do you have any concerns about the Convention itself?  Do you have a statement of position on this issue that you would like to see communicated before Canada’s report to the UN is sent off by departmental bureaucrats?  If so, please pass them along ASAP.  Mr. Lowther notes that in the first year of the 36th Parliament alone, MPs tabled petitions of almost 12,000 signatures from individuals concerned about the implications of the UN Convention on parental rights and responsibilities and other issues. After Canada’s first report on compliance with the UN convention in 1994, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child was critical of Canada for among other things, allowing parents to use spanking as a form of discipline.  Please pass along any comments that you might have to the Ottawa office of Eric Lowther,  MP by email, by fax, or by post.  Email: [email protected] Fax: 613-995-7111 Post: Room 254 Wellington Building,  House of Commons,  Ottawa, ON, K1A 0A6   A copy of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Canada’s first report on compliance with the Convention, and the UN Committee’s response to Canada’s first report can be accessed via the Heritage Canada website:  https://www.pch.gc.ca/ddp-hrd/english/rotcmenu.htm
