WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — Momentum is reportedly growing in the U.S. House of Representatives for an impeachment inquiry into U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland over his handling of the federal investigation into Hunter Biden after whistleblowers alleged that the Justice Department shot down attempts to pursue further charges against the president’s scandal-ridden son.
Last week, IRS whistleblowers testified before Congress that the Biden DOJ had stepped in on two separate occasions to block Trump-appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who is heading up the investigation into the younger Biden, from pursuing additional charges against him, Breitbart News reported Tuesday.
“In addition, the whistleblowers alleged Garland rejected a request to appoint a special counsel in the probe to place a degree of separation between the DOJ and President Joe Biden,” the outlet reported.
As LifeSiteNews previously noted, Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges in exchange for avoiding prosecution for a felony gun charge.
The plea deal came after a five-year-long investigation and has sparked outrage from conservatives who argue the arrangement shows the DOJ is protecting the Biden family from more serious influence-peddling and corruption allegations.
Axios noted that Weiss has been in charge of the investigation since the Trump administration and that the Biden DOJ decided to leave him in place “to try to avoid appearing to influence the investigation.”
Garland, who said in March that the authority rested with him as to whether or not to greenlight additional charges against Hunter Biden, has denied barring Weiss from pursuing further prosecution beyond the tax and gun charges, Breitbart noted.
On Sunday, Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said he would instigate an impeachment inquiry into Garland by early July if the IRS whistleblower statements alleging DOJ interference check out.
He reiterated his threat in a Monday interview on Fox and Friends.
“What [Garland] is saying and what Weiss is saying are two different things,” McCarthy told the network. “And if it is true what the IRS whistleblowers are saying, we will start impeachment inquiries on the attorney general.”
In exclusive statements to Breitbart, numerous members of the House Judiciary Committee, including Texas Rep. Chip Roy, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, and California Rep. Darrell Issa, said they would support McCarthy if he launched impeachment proceedings.
Confirming support for a potential inquiry, Wyoming Rep. Harriet Hageman echoed other Republicans’ concerns about a “two-tiered” justice system that favors Democrats and punishes those on the right.
“Whistleblower allegations related to the Hunter and Joe Biden investigation make it abundantly clear a two-tiered system of justice exists today,” Hageman said, arguing that the Biden DOJ is being used as “a political weapon … to punish opponents of the president.”
“I fully support Speaker McCarthy on this issue and welcome the opportunity to question Mr. Garland in Judiciary Committee hearings,” she said.
“Congress can’t just look away from the culture of corruption that’s there for all to see, and the possibility of impeachment has to be on the table,” Rep. Issa said, flagging “the unprecedented targeting of parents” as an example of “partisan politics.”

Throughout the Biden administration, Republicans have pointed to a slew of actions by the Biden Justice Department as examples of its alleged weaponization against conservatives.
Such actions and memoranda include the allocation of DOJ resources to keep an eye on parents opposed to radical curricula and COVID mandates in schools, the raids and prosecutions against pro-life advocates like Mark Houck, the notorious Richmond, Virginia FBI memo directing surveillance operations against “radical traditionalist Catholics,” and the unprecedented Mar-a-Lago raid followed by the DOJ’s criminal prosecution of former U.S. President Donald Trump on 37 felony charges.
