LONDON, July 27, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) — A Swedish high-school student recently failed a biology class for saying that homosexuality is abnormal, according to Swedish national news-site, svt.se.

The site reports that a grade 8 student at Nynäshamn Highschool in Stockholm County, Sweden, expressed the opinion that homosexuality was “onormalt” — literally “abnormal” — and, as a result, received a failing grade.

When the student questioned the grade, the teacher reportedly replied that it was because of the student’s opinions. The goal of the school’s curriculum, the teacher said, was that students show respect for different sexual orientations, and the student’s views did not correspond with that goal.

The student’s parents reported the case to the school board, who investigated the case. The board concluded that the school should have provided extra support and the teacher should have informed the parents, when it became clear that the student was at risk of failing. However, the school board will not take any action since the student has completed upper elementary school.

When the story hit the news, it sparked a vigorous debate on Swedish social media network Flashback Forum. Anonymous commentators discussed the incident, one expressing the concern that it was “another step in the direction of a Sweden without free speech.”

Another member declared, “This shows that the Swedish school system is an indoctrination centre… The Swedish school should teach students to think critically and have their own opinions, but here we have one student who chose to have a non-politically correct opinion and was punished for it.”
