TAIPEI, Jan 2, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Last Thursday, the Taiwanese government legalized the use of the RU-486 abortion drug after only four months of testing. Meanwhile, the Taiwan’s Bureau of National Health Insurance released statistics indicating that there were 42,282 abortions in the country last year. However, Su Tsung-hsien, secretary-general of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Association, said the actual number could reach as high as 100,000 if the numbers included abortion performed in private clinics. Health officials said abortion is the fifth most common surgical procedure performed in Taiwan.

LifeSite reported in early December that a recent survey of women by the Taiwan Association of Obstetrics and Gynecology revealed that 84 percent of the respondents said that the availability of RU-486 was bound to lead to promiscuity. Ninety-three percent of the respondents agreed with the view that the use of RU-486 should be restricted.
