MOSCOW, Mar 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Figures on abortion and infertility were cited at a meeting between State Duma security committee chairman Alexander Gurov and specialists of Moscow’s centre of obstetrics, gynecology and perinatology today. The statistics revealed that ten per cent of the over two million women who obtain registered abortions in Russia each year are left sterile by the procedure.

Itar-Tass reports that the figures are particularly detrimental given Russia’s massive under-population woes. Russia’s birth rate continues to plummet with infertility and miscarriage abounding say doctors. The statistics indicate that more than five million Russian women and four million Russian men are infertile and up to 12,000 babies are born annually with low birth weight. The number (approximately 1,230,000) of infants born in Russia every year falls 750,000 short of merely maintaining the current population level.
