HOUSTON, March 31, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A woman is suing a Texas abortionist and the clinic for an abortion committed while she was only 17 years old. Cherise Hughes’ used a fake ID to procure an abortion, claiming her actual age was 18 years old. Her parents were not notified by the abortuary, as is required by Texas parental notification law.

“I don’t want people to think I don’t feel any remorse about this,” Hughes said. “I hurt everyday about it.”  Hughes and her parents have sued Aaron’s Family Planning Clinic and Dr. Douglass Karpin for damages. The Texas Parental Notice Act, passed in 1999, requires that parents of children under the age of 18 have to be notified and provide consent for a minor to procure an abortion.  “I wish at least someone would have had enough concern to contact my family,” Hughes, now married and the mother of two small children, said. “Things probably would have been a lot different.”

Hughes argues that parental notification laws are in place for a purpose, “A minor needs direction,” she said. “They have a right to receive that from their parents.”  Read related LifeSiteNews.com coverage “Texas Senate Passes Informed Consent Law,” at: https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2003/may/03052307.html
