BANGKOK, Jan 15, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The Thai Medical Council is seeking to have the abortion law loosened to allow more abortions. The Bangkok Post reported Friday that the council is demanding that while the law is amended abortionists must be “temporarily allowed to conduct abortions without any legal repercussion”.

Until last year abortions were restricted in Thailand to cases of reported rape, or a risk to the health of the mother. Last year the Medical Council urged the Health Ministry to add a clause allowing abortion in cases where there is a high chance the baby will be born deformed or with a debilitating disease.
