TAMPA BAY, Florida (LifeSiteNews) – Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has called for lawsuits against doctors who perform “gender transition” surgeries on gender-confused children.

During an August 3 press conference, DeSantis stated that doctors should be sued for providing double mastectomies and castrations to children with gender dysphoria, Florida Voice News reported.

“[They] talk about these young kids getting ‘gender-affirming care.’ They don’t tell you what that is,” DeSantis said. “They’re actually giving very young girls double mastectomies; they want to castrate these young boys. That’s wrong.”

“You don’t disfigure 10, 12, 13-year-old kids based on gender dysphoria. 80% of it resolves anyways by the time they get older,” DeSantis said. “I think these doctors need to get sued for what’s happening.”

In contrast to the Biden administration pushing hormones and “sex-change” surgeries on children, the Florida Department of Health has been warning against transgender drugs and surgeries for minors.

DeSantis’ recent condemnation of “sex-change” surgeries for children is a continuation of his defense of children against irreversible surgeries and hormone interventions.

In June, the DeSantis administration moved to ban Medicaid coverage for “experimental” transgender surgeries and drugs.

In July, he condemned “gender-affirming care” for children, calling it a euphemism for castration and sterilization.

Up to around 100 percent of boys and 90 percent of girls with gender dysphoria come to accept their biological sexes as they reach adulthood, according to the American Psychiatric Association, but virtually all of those started on puberty blockers later take cross-sex hormones, as LifeSite has reported. These drugs sterilize users and typically lead to devastating transgender surgeries.

Puberty-blocking drugs, like Supprelin LA and Lupron, are linked to serious, permanent side effects, such as osteoporosis, cognitive impairment, and sterility.

Republican state officials are increasingly moving to defend children from irreversible transgender surgeries and drugs, as LifeSite recently reported:

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey earlier this month signed into law a ban on transgender drugs and surgeries for minors below age 19. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey approved a bill the week before prohibiting underage “sex change” surgeries in the Grand Canyon State.

In February, Gov. Greg Abbott directed Texas state agencies to treat “gender-transitioning procedures” for minors as child abuse and investigate parents and medical facilities responsible for “transitioning” kids.

Florida lawmakers have introduced similar measures, but the proposals have stalled in the GOP-controlled state legislature. Gov. DeSantis said last year that he would sign such legislation if it crossed his desk.
