HOLLYWOOD, CA, March 18, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Gosnell, the film depicting the life and crimes of late-term abortionist Kermit Gosnell, has just named its director, Nick Searcy of the TV series Justified.

“I am both excited and humbled by the opportunity to have a part in bringing this important American story to the screen,” Searcy told The Hollywood Reporter, which revealed the development this morning. “It is a story that many in Hollywood were unwilling to tell, and I am grateful to Ann [McElhinney], Phelim [McAleer], and Magdalena [Segeida] for having the courage to tell it.”

Searcy, who is best known as an actor, will take the lead directing this true crime adaptation of the life of Gosnell, who may have murdered hundreds of babies after they were born inside his Philadelphia “House of Horrors” abortion clinic.

“There are three aspects to this story that are fascinating,” Searcy told the Reporter. “What happened; why it was allowed to happen; and why no one wanted to talk about it after it happened.”

Police raided Gosnell's abortion facility after receiving evidence that he freely dispensed controlled substances to drug dealers – another crime for which he was convicted. In the process, they found an uninspected, filth-covered abortion facility where Gosnell allowed newborn babies to be born alive before snipping their spinal column with scissors.

Despite the details of murder and exploitation, the national media ignored the story for months.

McAleer, McElhinney, and Segeida – who have worked together on documentaries like FrackNation – envisioned bringing his story to life as a made-for-TV movie but now hope to make this film a theatrical release.

McElhinney has hinted that the film may focus on the forgotten “heroes” of the ordeal, such as women who changed their mind about having an abortion at Gosnell's “house of horrors” and the handful of journalists who had the courage to cover it.

The three reached their goal of $2.1 million last May from online crowdfunding and have now exceeded $2.3 million. They hope to raise another $300,000 and reach at least 100,000 donors.

They already announced that John Sullivan, who directed Dinesh D'Souza's successful film 2016: Obama's America, has signed on as the film's producer.

Andrew Klavan, whose books True Crime and Don't Say a Word were made into films, will write the script.

The film has been endorsed by Kevin Sorbo, Sloane Brown of Drama Queen, and former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint.
