WASHINGTON, D.C., June 22, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) – President Obama’s decision to endorse same-sex “marriage” has not won him the support of every homosexual lobbying organization. GOProud, a group of homosexual Republicans, endorsed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney on Wednesday.

Lisa De Pasquale, a former director of CPAC, said  the group “enthusiastically” endorsed Romney, who as governor implemented the Massachusetts Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex weddings.

At the time, 44 leading pro-family conservatives sent a letter to Romney stating the High Court had exceeded its authority and calling on him to refuse to comply with its edict.

David French, the founder of Evangelicals for Mitt, told LifeSiteNews.com the accusation was unfair. “While governor of Massachusetts, Mitt went so far as to sue his own legislature to force a vote on a marriage amendment, so he’s demonstrated his commitment to traditional marriage,” he said.

Romney still says he opposes applying the term “marriage” to homosexual unions.

GOProud did not mention the ruling in its endorsement, instead focusing on pocketbook issues. “Most gay Americans – like their straight counterparts – are not better off than they were 4 years ago,” said Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProud’s executive director. “The truth is that gay people are living in the disastrous failed Obama economy, too.”

French said as an evangelical and Republican, he welcomed their support. “It would be surprising if any group of Republicans failed to endorse Mitt Romney,” he said. While French told LifeSiteNews the governor’s “stands on life and marriage are well-known and rock-solid,” those who disagree with him on those issues “can still see that our country must be rescued from the Obama economy.”

Two GOProud board members cast their ballots for someone else. Co-founder Christopher R. Barron voted to endorse Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson, a former New Mexico governor. Shortly after being frozen out of the Republican presidential race, Johnson endorsed same-sex “marriage.”

The group notes it is “the first and only organization representing gay Americans to endorse Governor Romney.”

The homosexual lobbying group has had a strained relationship with the party’s base and with other LGBT pressure groups. It has enjoyed an on-again, off-again relationship with the annual conservative political gathering, CPAC.

When columnist Ann Coulter agreed to give the keynote address at GOProud’s “HomoCon” in 2010, WorldNetDaily dropped her from its “Taking America Back National Conference.” Coulter subsequently used the GOProud venue to oppose same-sex “marriage.”

The late Andrew Breitbart helped launch the group, only to resign after it “outed” an adviser to Rick Perry’s presidential campaign.

On the other hand, most LGBT organizations have rewarded Barack Obama for endorsing same-sex “marriage” last month and making it one of the defining issues of his presidential campaign.

Homosexual activist Dan Savage greeted the Republican organization’s announcement by saying, “The GOP’s house faggots grab their ankles, right on cue.” LaSalvia said Savage owes the group an apology.  However, LaSalvia had kind words for former “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood after she backed same-sex nuptials.

Republicans received news of the endorsement shortly before the free market organization FreedomWorks announced it will not endorse Romney. The group actively opposed the governor during this year’s primaries.

French told LifeSiteNews he hopes that “Mitt gets support from across the political and ideological spectrum, so that our country can experience a period of unity after the bitter division of the Obama years.”
