Today is the feast of St. Joachim, father of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 16, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – According to the Catholic Church’s traditional calendar, today is the feast of St. Joachim, father of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although neither St. Joachim nor St. Anne, Mary’s mother, appear in the Gospels, their stories were passed down through tradition.
St. Anne and St. Joachim were advanced in age, but had no children as St. Anne was barren. When St. Joachim went to offer a temple sacrifice, his sacrifice was spurned due to St. Anne being barren. In great sadness and shame St. Joachim fled to the mountains immediately to fast and pray. At the same time, St. Anne lamented her barrenness and the added loss of her husband. An angel appeared to both St. Joachim and St. Anne and brought the good news that the couple’s prayers had been heard and would be answered. And clearly they were!
St. Joachim is the patron saint of fathers, married couples, grandfathers, and grandparents. Today we pray for the intercession of St. Joachim especially for our fathers, the spiritual leaders of the family. We pray that God grants them continued devotion, courage, and perseverance in the face of all the evils attacking the family today.
Pope Leo XIII granted an indulgence of 300 days for praying the following prayers:
Prayer for Protection to St. Joachim
O Great and glorious patriarch St Joachim, how I rejoice to think that thou wast chosen from among all the Saints to co-operate in the divine mysteries, and enrich the world by bestowing on it the great Mother of God, most holy Mary! By this singular privilege thou hast become so powerful with the Mother and the Son as to obtain whatever graces may be necessary for us. With great confidence, then, I have recourse to thy most powerful protection, and I commend to thee all the wants of my family, both spiritual and temporal, as well as my own; and especially I appeal to thee for the particular grace which I desire and expect from thy Paternal intercession. And since thou wast a perfect model of the interior life, obtain for me interior recollection and a distaste for the fleeting goods of this earth, with a lively and persevering love of Jesus and Mary. Obtain for me, too, devotion and sincere obedience to Holy Church, and to the True Supreme Pontiff who governs her, so that I may live and die in Faith, Hope, and perfect Charity, invoking the most holy names of Jesus and Mary, and may save my soul. Amen.
Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be repeated three times.
