December 29, 2016 (LifeSiteNews) – 2016 was a turbulent year marked by political unrest, division within the Catholic Church, and terrorism. Fights about religious liberty, the definition of marriage, and whether pre-born humans deserve basic rights continued to wage worldwide. Below are the top 16 most read stories on LifeSiteNews during this past year.

16. Pope Emeritus Benedict breaks silence: speaks of ‘deep crisis’ facing Church post-Vatican II
Pope Benedict XVI gave a rare interview about what he perceives as a "two-sided deep crisis" the Church is facing in the wake of the Second Vatican Council. He said that contributing to this crisis are a lack of belief that anyone goes to hell, Catholics believing that salvation is possible outside the Church, and "pluralistic theories" that declare all religions equal.

"Why should you try to convince the people to accept the Christian faith when they can be saved even without it?" the pope emeritus asked.

15. Clinton asked if babies have ANY rights before birth: Watch her disturbing answer
Hillary Clinton defended her support of late-term abortion on demand after first dodging a question about whether babies have any rights before birth.

"Just to be clear, there’s no — without any exceptions?" FOX News' Bret Baier asked her.

"No," she replied, going on to defend late-term abortions on babies who can feel pain: "I object to the recent effort in Congress to pass a law saying after 20 weeks, you know, no such exceptions, because although these are rare, Bret, they sometimes arise in the most complex, difficult medical situation. And so...under Roe v. Wade, it is appropriate to say, in these circumstances, so long as there’s an exception for the life and health of the mother."

14. The LGBT fraud has been exposed, and they’re definitely not happy about it
Many prevailing ideas about homosexuality and gender are unscientific myths. This article explored bombshell revelations that expose lies promoted by a small group of LGBT elites.

13. BREAKING: Grand jury indicts pro-life investigator behind baby part videos, clears Planned Parenthood
A Houston, Texas grand jury indicted David Daleiden, the man behind the Center for Medical Progress videos while letting Planned Parenthood off the hook. Daleiden faced up to 20 years in prison for "tampering with a governmental record" and offering to purchase human organs from Planned Parenthood. The abortion giant didn't face charges for being willing to sell those organs.

Since then, the charges have been dropped.

In 2016, Congress's Select Investigative Panel on Infant Lives referred multiple abortion facilities, Planned Parenthoods, universities, and fetal tissue companies for criminal prosecution after looking into the baby body parts trade. It also recommended a late-term abortionist be prosecuted for murdering babies born alive.

12. Woman takes abortion pill, sees her 7-week-old baby
"I regretted it 100% after that night. Nothing can truly prepare you for an abortion no matter what route you take. I’m still struggling with it and have nightmares about it all the time. I always ask myself, 'what if I never did it?'"

11. If you’re on the fence about your vote, this pastor clarifies how the very future of America is at stake
Dr. Jim Garlow, pastor of Skyline Church in the San Diego, CA area, laid out the stark differences between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. He didn't mince words when describing how "Trump has moved pro-life" but Clinton is "pro-baby killing, and prides herself on that, and honors the organization—Planned Parenthood—that actually traffics human parts from dead babies whom they have killed."

"This is below anything we have seen since Nazi Germany," he said. "The gall of Hillary!"

10. Pro-life mom who miscarried at 13 weeks stunned to see ‘perfectly formed tiny baby’
"I expected to be handed a blob that early into pregnancy," Jessica told LifeSiteNews in an exclusive interview. "But instead, I was handed a perfectly formed tiny baby. And he kind of blew us all away. The nurses just kept saying, 'He's so perfect, he's so perfect,'" she said.

Baby Noah's fingers and toes were completely formed. His ears, nose, and mouth were completely identifiable. At this stage, his liver and kidneys would have been fully functioning. His bodily systems would have been completely formed, only needing time within the safety of his mother’s womb to develop until reaching self-sufficiency.

"I always follow my pregnancies with those little baby apps, but even they did not do justice to how perfectly human my son looked," said Jessica.

9. ‘You before me’ is better than ‘Me Before You’
This article by Stephanie Gray describes the moral problems in Me Before You. The film was criticized for being "disability death porn" and glorifying suicide as a good option for people facing suffering.

8. Ahead of Al Smith Dinner, Cardinal Dolan says Hillary owes Catholics an apology
New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan called for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to disassociate herself from anti-Catholic statements made by her campaign chairman and said the remarks were "extraordinarily patronizing and insulting to Catholics."

The offensive statements were made in emails released by WikiLeaks. Clinton Campaign Chairman John Podesta and Director of Communications Jennifer Palmieri, both Catholics, were communicating with activists from two left-wing organizations. In the emails, Catholics were debased, with their beliefs being called "severely backwards." Conservative Catholics also were accused of "an amazing bastardization of the faith," and Rupert Murdoch was mocked for baptizing his children as Catholics in the River Jordan.

The U.S. Church’s bishops were slammed in the emails as well, referred to as "a middle ages dictatorship."

Podesta admitted to helping launch a "progressive" infiltration of the Church in another email, and he took an active role in attempting to incite a liberal Catholic revolt against the U.S. bishops.

"We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good to organize for a moment like this," Podesta wrote. "But I think it lacks the leadership to do so now. Likewise Catholics United. Like most Spring movements, I think this one will have to be bottom up."

7. How abortion played a part in Celine Dion’s devotion to her husband and family
If it hadn't been for a Catholic priest, Celine Dion might have never been born.

"He told [my mother] that she had no right to go against nature" by aborting her child, Dion explained. "So I have to admit that in a way, I owe my life to that priest."

6. Priest: ‘You might not have a church to go to if you don’t vote the right way in November’
Former Ave Maria Law School chaplain Father Michael Orsi delivered a blistering, fiery speech at a National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children event on September 10. Orsi shredded the notion that religion has no role in politics and outlined very clear threats to religious liberty. He said, in part:

For too long, pastors and churches have been bullied into believing that they can say nothing political from the pulpit....Let me remind you: the Bible is a political document. The prophets, including John the Baptist, and Jesus, lost their lives because they spoke the truth to power...

Too many of the pastors—too many, practically all—in Germany refused to speak against national socialism," continued Orsi. "And look [at] the result: millions of Jews, pastors, priests, homosexuals, gypsies all lost their lives because everyone was afraid. What are you afraid of, a couple of bucks? Your tax-exempt status? What’s that going to do to you? Your churches may be closed anyway, because if a certain party gets elected, this certain party said, if the churches do not agree with our interpretation of women’s reproductive rights, they’ll just have to change their doctrine...

Our opponents believe once they destroy the family, once they destroy the churches, they can re-create society in their own image and their own likeness. That, my friends, is not just political. That is diabolical. Get it straight, for crying out loud! The devil is in this!

We are in a battle for the soul of America...

Somehow, [Christians] have come to buy the story that you cannot be political in church. Let me tell you right now, oh yes, you can, and oh, yes, you better be. Because you might not have a church to go to if you don’t vote the right way in November.

5. The uncomfortable truth about Christian support for Trump
Many Christians supported Trump "not because of what he will do, but because of what he won’t do."

In this hard-hitting article, Jonathon Van Maren explains why "voting for Trump is not a reflection on Trump" but rather "is a reflection on just how bad Hillary Clinton is, and just how scared many, many Christians are of another near-decade of secular progressive rule."

4. Man strips in front of girls in locker room, says transgender law allows it
On February 8, a Seattle man twice entered the changing room of a swimming pool and began disrobing, once in front of a young girls' swim team, saying transgender policies gave him the right to do so.

3. The horror stories are real. Don’t give your children a smartphone.
Children, and most teenagers, do not need a phone with Internet access. They do not need nonstop access to social media sites that put them under the influence of their peers rather than adults. They do not need the social pressure that inevitably – inevitably - comes with entering a cyber-world of teenagers with new standards and new currency. And above all, they should not have access to all the pornography the web can offer, vile material that is setting new sexual standards teenagers across North America and beyond are beginning to conform to, through pressure, through force, or by choice.

2. The painfully obvious reason Christians voted for Trump (that liberals just don’t understand)
It's simple, really.

1. He performed 1,200 abortions. In new viral video, he wants you to see what abortion really looks like
AbortionProcedures.com features Dr. Levatino, who has performed more than 1,200 abortions, describing the most common methods of abortion as each one is depicted in animation. The videos were peer reviewed by doctors and medical professionals. And they are changing hearts and minds across the country.
