TORONTO, September 19, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Communications Director for the Archdiocese of Toronto has informed LifeSite that the archdiocese has currently collected 88,936 signatures on a petition to protect marriage, with more expected.  LifeSite has also learned that the archdiocese of Ottawa has nearly 20,000 signatures to contribute.  The petition to protect the traditional definition of marriage was an effort of the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Similar petitions are being collected by Campaign Life Coalition and other groups.  Given these numbers, and the sizes of the 12 other dioceses, over 300,000 signatures are expected from the Bishops’ petition campaign.
