TORONTO, September 2, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In the spirit of Pope John Paul II, who as a youth participated in underground theatre to keep a secure footing for the Polish culture of life and faith in the hearts of his fellow countrymen under Nazi occupation, a Toronto group has launched a unique arts initiative.  “The Beads is a movement of compassion seeking the restoration of culture through the arts,” explains foundress Susan HooKong-Taylor, a singer-songwriter who co-wrote one of the favourite theme-songs of World Youth Day 2002.  On Sunday, September 14, The Beads will be launching the first of its monthly events at Hugh’s Room in Toronto. Featuring music, visual art, literature, poetry, dance and film, the monthly event will bring forward local and international artists to celebrate life, faith and community.  On Sunday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m., The Beads will feature internationally acclaimed author and iconographer Michael D. O’Brien as well as guitarist John Dawson, comedian Rory Donohue, and Ana Da Costa.  Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $12.00 at the door.  Doors will open at 6:00 pm to provide an opportunity to view the art and talk to the artists.  For tickets and information please call Hugh’s Room at (416) 531-6604, or Elena Repka at (416) 452-3365 or visit www.hughsroom.com , or www.thebeads.ca
