OTTAWA, Mar 6, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Progressive Conservative Party leader Joe Clark, recently blasted by his Calgary Bishop Fred Henry as “scandalous” for being “pro-choice” while claiming to be a Catholic, has laid out stringent conditions for a united conservative alternative. In a letter in the Toronto Star yesterday, Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day outlined Clark’s demands: “any new form of co-operation must retain the Conservative name, must espouse ‘socially progressive’ policies, must include ‘equal representation’ between Tory and Alliance members, and must be a viable national alternative.”

Day responded to the demands noting that the process for discerning unifying principles must be carried out in a democratic fashion. Responding on the social agenda, Day advocated “responsible social policies that respect and protect individuals, families, and communities.” The homosexual activist group EGALE pounced on Day’s statement saying that since he defines the family heterosexually he is out of touch with Canadians. On the contrary, opinion polls have consistently shown that EGALE represents the fringe of Canadian views about marriage.
