WASHINGTON, D.C. (LifeSiteNews) — The Department of Justice (DOJ) asked President Donald Trump to appear in Washington in front of a grand jury as part of prosecutor Jack Smith’s probe into January 6.

President Trump announced the news on Truth Social that he received a “target letter,” which requested his presence. It does not formally mean Trump has been charged but “the letter serves as an indication that an indictment is likely coming soon,” according to CBS News.

“Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday night.

“THE DEMOCRAT PROSECUTORS WAITED YEARS TO BRING CHARGES SO THAT THEY COULD INTERFERE WITH THE 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION. THEY ARE GETTING, HOWEVER, BIG BLOWBACK!!!,” he wrote in a subsequent post.

“The target letter highlights three federal statutes, according to a senior Trump source,” CBS News reported. “Two of the statutes include potential charges of conspiracy to commit an offense or to defraud the U.S., and deprivation of rights under color of law. The third indicates potential charges ranging from obstruction of an official proceeding to tampering with a witness, victim or an informant.”

The letter and investigation drew criticism from Republicans.

“We want to be in a situation where you don’t have one side just constantly trying to put the other side in jail, and that unfortunately is what we’re seeing now,” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a fellow 2024 Republican presidential candidate, said in reaction to the news.

“They’re targeting President Trump because he’s fighting for you,” Congressman Jim Jordan wrote on social media.

“President Trump recently went up in the polls. So what does the Biden Administration do next? Weaponize government to go after President Biden’s number one opponent. This is not equal justice. It’s wrong, and the American public is tired of it,” Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said.

Trump is also facing federal charges pertaining to his alleged mishandling of classified documents. Since the unprecedented raid on a former president’s home, it has come out that President Joe Biden also had classified documents in his possession at his home in Delaware and at a think tank he ran through the University of Pennsylvania.

A New York grand jury also indicted Trump in March on charges relating to his alleged improper payments to pornography performer.
