LANSING, Michigan (LifeSiteNews) – Tulsi Gabbard, the former U.S. Representative for Hawaii who recently left the Democrats, has called on Michigan residents to oppose Proposal 3 on today’s ballot, since it would change the state Constitution, allowing partial birth and late term abortions for any reason.

“I urge Michigan residents to protect women, parental rights & children by voting against Proposal 3 that includes loopholes to allow late-term/partial birth abortion (which is really infanticide) & overturns law to inform parents of a child pursuing abortion/hormone therapies,” Gabbard wrote on Twitter.

Proposal 3 “amends the state Constitution … overturning a law that requires abortion facilities to be licensed and inspected for the health and safety of women,” Gabbard said.

During a gubernatorial debate with staunchly pro-abortion Governor Gretchen Whitmer, pro-life candidate Tudor Dixon also called on voters to oppose Prop 3.

“It’s unfortunate that we’re not being honest about what Proposal 3 is,” Dixon said. “We know that Proposal 3 does remove parental consent. It also makes it so that you don’t have to be a doctor to perform an abortion, but it does align with her [Whitmer’s] agenda. Her past — she’s voted against a ban on partial-birth abortion, and Proposal 3 allows abortion up to the moment of birth for any reason, including sex selection.”

Dixon denounced the proposal as “the most radical abortion law in the entire country.”

As LifeSiteNews reported in October, Proposal 3 would also “create a right to sterilize and potentially even transition minors without their parents’ knowledge or consent,” according to legal experts.

According to an analysis by the Great Lakes Justice Center (GLJC), as well as an article by former Michigan Solicitor General John Bursch published by the Michigan Catholic Conference, the implications reach far beyond the expansive text.

“Proposal 3 goes much farther than merely codifying Roe v. Wade, invalidating more than two dozen Michigan pro-life laws and authorizing minors to obtain abortions without a parent’s consent or even notice,’ Bursch writes. And ‘because Proposal 3 grants this right to “every individual,” without age limits, that means the proposal, on its face, authorizes a minor to obtain a sterilization without parental consent or even notice, such as when a minor desires to change his or her gender.’

Archbishop Allen Vigneron, of the Archdiocese of Detroit, also called on Catholics to oppose Prop 3 in the Detroit Catholic, stating, “We are quickly approaching the November 8 election, during which voters in Michigan will decide on Proposal 3, an amendment to the state constitution that would allow unregulated abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy.”

Michigan is one of three states voting on such constitutional initiatives, while other states are deciding pro-life measures on today’s ballot.
