Two abortion clinics have reopened in Alabama, though one's future rests on whether a pro-life state law will be enforced.

In January, Planned Parenthood Southeast's Birmingham clinic was closed after two of its employees sold abortion drugs to someone in the parking lot of the facility. That facility has reopened after making several changes, including to its staff.

Alabama's Women's Center in Huntsville closed its doors in June because its facility could not handle a new state law that requires clinics to meet requirements for ambulatory surgical centers. Now in a new location, approved by the state health department, the clinic has reopened.

Pro-life advocates tried to prevent the reopening of the Huntsville clinic, saying the owners should not have been granted a variance for the construction. However, local officials disagreed.

However, the Planned Parenthood clinic is still at risk of closure if the state wins its battle to enforce a law mandating abortion clinic doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. The law was ruled unconstitutional in August by a federal judge because it would close three of the state's five abortion clinics, but the state has appealed the decision.
