ROME, November 27, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Two Italian doctors were sentenced to 20 years in prison Monday for performing illegal abortions.  Doctors Ilio Spallone and his nephew Marcello Spallone were convicted for doing late term abortions beyond the 90 days of gestation during which abortion on demand is decriminalized.  The 12 abortions in question were committed between 1995 and 1997.  Agence France Presse reports that an obstetrician involved in the abortions was given a 14-year term in prison, while an anesthetist and a secretary each received 12-year terms. A total of 67 people were charged in the case, with the trial date for the other 56 set for March 19, 2003.
