LONDON, UK, June 11, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – There were nearly 190,000 abortions in the UK in 2011, according to new statistics published May 29th by the country’s Department of Health.
The Department revealed there were 189,931 abortions in England and Wales, up 0.2% from 2010, but down from the 2007 high of 198,500.
Among teenagers there was a slight decrease from 2010 with 3.4 per 1000 under 16 having abortions and 15 per 1000 for women under 18. The number of abortions among women aged 20 stayed the same at 33 per 1000.
The number of abortions among women aged 30-34 increased by 10% between 2009 and 2011, says the Daily Mail. The paper suggests the increase is because of the recent economic downturn and women not wanting to interrupt their careers.
“It just seems to be abortion on demand. It’s like a form of contraception,” Josephine Quintavalle of Comment on Reproductive Ethics told the Daily Mail.
Of the 189,931 abortions in 2011, 36% were performed on women who had already had one or more abortions.
