LONDON (LifeSiteNews) — U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his views about transgender ideology Wednesday, remarking that while the issue requires “sensitivity, tact, love, and care,” “the basic facts of biology remain overwhelmingly important.”

Johnson made the comments during a weekly meeting in the British Parliament in which the House of Commons may ask questions of the prime minister, the Daily Wire reported.

During the meeting, House of Commons member Angela Richardson asked Johnson about a review of Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) funding for transgender youth.

According to Richardson, the funding review “highlights the need for more research into our young girls, why so many of them are presenting with gender distress.”

Richardson then asked whether Johnson would hold a separate meeting with her and other Members of Parliament to discuss how the British government could “constructively support these young people who are experiencing gender distress.”

Johnson agreed to do so, and expressed the need to treat “transgender” individuals with “respect.”

“[T]his is one of those issues that the whole House is coming to realize, one that requires extreme sensitivity, tact, love, and care,” Johnson said. “We must recognize that when people want to make a transition in their lives, that they should be treated with the maximum possible generosity and respect. And we have systems in this country that allow that, and have done for a long time, we should be very proud of it.”

The prime minister stopped short at affirming transgender ideology, however, instead promoting basic scientific facts regarding the nature of sex.

“But I do want to say in addition that I think when it comes to distinguishing between a man and a woman, that the basic facts of biology remain overwhelmingly important,” the prime minister said.

Former Conservative MP Nick de Bois commented on Johnson’s statement in a Thursday tweet, remarking that it’s “a funny old world when the PM feels the need to say this and that it then becomes so newsworthy.”

Johnson’s comments come as transgender ideology and the “basic facts of biology” have repeatedly made headlines both in the U.K. and the U.S.

The Daily Wire pointed out that “opposition party leader Sir Keir Starmer said in a March 12 interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Times that ‘trans women are women,’” and “two of his shadow cabinet ministers ‘struggled’ to define what a woman was.”

Meanwhile, U.S. Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson this week drew criticism from conservatives during her confirmation hearings for being unable to define what a woman is because she’s “not a biologist.”

Conservatives along with feminist groups and female athletes have also slammed the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for its policy which allowed University of Pennsylvania swimmer William “Lia” Thomas, a 22-year-old man who identifies as a woman, to compete in and win the Division I Women’s 500-yard freestyle last week.
