LONDON, Dec 14, 2000 (LSN.ca) – The annual report of the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA) released this week reveals that during the period 1998/9 there were just over 8,300 births due to all forms of in vitro fertilization. However, there were well over 70,000 human embryos who were created, implanted and died in order to achieve that result. The data in the report indicate “30,520 (cycles) reached embryo transfer” and in 50.5% of cases three embryos were transferred. Moreover, the report says that the number of transfers where “only two embryos” were transferred was 48.6%. The outrageous number of human deaths associated with this procedure should be sufficient cause to ban the practice.
