UNITED NATIONS, Jan 8 (LSN) – In a startling revelation on the UN website, a document indicating there was no way out for States once they had ratified UN covenants was released yesterday.  The “General Comment” was adopted by the Human Rights Committee on October 29,  1997, but the document was only produced on Dec 8.  In it, the UN states unequivocally, “The Committee is therefore firmly of the view that international law does not permit a State which has ratified or acceded or succeeded to the Covenant to denounce it or withdraw from it”.  The document is available on the UN website at https://www.unhchr.ch/tbs/doc.nsf/c12561460043cb8a4125611e00445ea9/06b6d70077b4df2c8025655400387939?OpenDocument
