UPDATE ON CHINESE WOMAN FORCED TO ABORT AFTER DEPORTATION

MELBOURNE, Australia, June 8 (LSN) – The Australian version of “60 Minutes” has stepped into the debate surrounding a Chinese woman who at nine months pregnant had begged for refugee status in Australia so she could give birth to her second child. Instead she was forced to return to China where she was forced to abort her baby despite Australian promises that she would not be harmed. The TV program’s reporters went to China and interviewed the woman, Zhu Qing Ping. They also brought her to the Australian consulate in Guangzhou seeking asylum.

Last month, Australian Senator Brian Harradine revealed to the press that Zhu was forced to abort her baby in China, providing a video with her testimony. In the last few weeks it has been reported that Zhu had to be heavily sedated in order to get her on the plane back to China. Similarly in China, “family planning” officials had to force her into a car to get her to the abortuary. A superficial investigation into the case by Australian authorities accepted the claim of the Chinese State Family Planning Commission that the woman eventually chose to have the abortion.

But 60 Minutes has revealed that contrary to earlier reports that Zhu had agreed to the abortion, the mother of the man who impregnated her was the one who signed the consent for the abortion. The investigative program has pressed the issue enough to get Australian politicians nervous. Australian Immigration Minister, Mr. Phillip Ruddock attempted to excuse himself from the situation in a 60 Minutes interview saying, “we have no obligation in relation to the citizens of other countries simply because they have been in Australia.” Ruddock called such late abortions “highly undesirable.”
