MONTEVIDEO, April 14, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Uruguayan Senate is set to vote Wednesday on a measure that could legalize abortion. If passed, the new legislation would be the first in existence in Latin America.  Analysts say the bill, which was narrowly approved by the House, is likely to pass the Senate.  Even if the measure is passed, however, Uruguay President Jorge Batlle has said that he will not sign the bill into law.  The new law would authorize abortions in the first trimester for women suffering the sweeping stipulations that the abortions can only be committed for financial, social or family hardship reasons.
