(LifeSiteNews) — In an appearance on Catholic Answers Live, Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, Oregon spoke out in condemnation of abortion, the undermining of marriage, and the new push for the acceptance of transgender ideology, calling these an attack of Satan against God.

In an hourlong interview with Catholic Answers Live national radio show, Archbishop Sample addressed the current culture wars facing the Church and society, offering a theological perspective on the controversial moral issues of the day. He rooted attacks on life and the family in Satan’s hatred of God, saying that since the devil cannot assault God directly, instead he pours out his fury on creatures and on those who love God, especially when they more clearly reflect His creative power.

“The Enemy despises the image of God in us,” Sample said. “I think Satan has engineered this whole acceptance of the evil of abortion.”

Explaining that every innocent child bears some likeness to Christ in His Incarnation, since Christ was himself a child, Sample said this infuriates the devil because it was through the Incarnation that Christ conquered and overthrew his kingdom.

Additionally, Sample said, the family is something of an icon of the Holy Trinity, since just as the Holy Spirit comes from the Father and the Son because of their love for each other, so children come from a marriage because of the love of a husband and wife. Hating the likeness between the love of the family and the interior life and communion of the Blessed Trinity, Satan seeks to destroy and undermine families, the archbishop said.

Identifying the devil’s hatred of God as the ultimate cause in the decline of culture, Sample highlighted the tragic effects of this decline on marriage. “Culture has devolved so marriages fail,” he declared.

Addressing the newest attacks on marriage posed by the transgender ideology sweeping the nation that were preceded by the cultural push for a universal acceptance of homosexuality in all corners of public life, Sample affirmed the basic complementarity of the two sexes written into human nature. “A man’s body doesn’t make sense without a woman’s body and a women’s body doesn’t make sense without a man’s body,” he declared, echoing the words of Genesis, “In the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

Sample then pointed out that to reject the distinction and complementarity of the two sexes is to attack God our Creator, in whose image we are made. “A lot of this insanity with gender ideology today is an attack on the image of God in each of us.”

During the interview, a caller asked Archbishop Sample how he might speak to transgender friends. The archbishop affirmed that real charity must be grounded in the truth and encouraged the man to love his friends and to find a good time to suggest proper help. “To love them doesn’t mean we accept the lie,” he said.

At a time in which many bishops are calling for the Church to cast off its moral teachings in favor of an agenda more acceptable to the secular world, Archbishop Sample stands out among Catholic prelates for his courage in clearly addressing controversial issues in a way that both exposes deceptions and provides a theological foundation for understanding the truth.
