Vatican Rep States “I don’t know what the United States is doing”.

UNITED NATIONS, April 24, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Washington Times reports that United States UN representatives have agreed to back a measure brought by delegates from Switzerland and the European Union to recognize families “in various forms.”

A senior official from the US Mission to the UN spoke to the Times anonymously and explained the support of the US saying, “obviously we feel this more reflects the families of today, which are headed by single parents and extended families.” However critics note that the language would almost certainly be applied to homosexual unions as well and lead to the recognition of gay unions as families becoming an internationally recognized right.

Commenting on the news, Monsignor James Reinert, negotiator for the Vatican’s delegation at the United Nations, told the Times “I don’t know what the United States is doing. There won’t be a compromise on this paragraph. There just won’t be. Too many people feel too strongly about this.”
