WASHINGTON, D.C., July 25, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday approved the latest attempt to ban partial-birth abortion, a bill sponsored by Rep. Steve Chabot, Ohio Republican. The 274 to 151 vote, with 65 Democrats breaking ranks to support the ban and 9 Republicans breaking ranks to vote against it, shifts the onus to the Democrat-controlled Senate, where, the Washington Times says, “its fate is not clear.” In the past, President Clinton twice vetoed attempted bans, while the Supreme Court threw out a Nebraska ban that contained too few loopholes in those almost non-existent cases where the life of the mother is endangered by pregnancy. “We now have a president who will sign this bill. It must not become another tombstone in the Senate’s legislative graveyard,” said House Majority Leader Dick Armey, Texas Republican. Some Democrats maintain that without a so-called “health exception” for the mother (which is the left’s favourite canard in the ongoing debate), the bill remains “unconstitutional.” According to the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) in Washington, D.C., “the bill is in peril in the Senate,” because Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (South Dakota Democrat) “is closely allied with the pro-abortion lobby.” To read a Washington Times report see: https://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20020725-98176.htm To visit Rep.
