Obama and the Supreme Court – What’s really at stake
If Barack Obama is elected president, he will drive the Court further in the wrong direction, and the liberal judicial activists that he appoints will likely serve for two or three decades. Our system of representative government, already under siege, would be lucky to survive an Obama presidency.

Obama and the Politics of Crowds
… crowds have not been a prominent feature of American politics. We associate them with the temper of Third World societies. We think of places like Argentina and Egypt and Iran, of multitudes brought together by their zeal for a Peron or a Nasser or a Khomeini. In these kinds of societies, the crowd comes forth to affirm its faith in a redeemer: a man who would set the world right. In recent days, those vast Obama crowds, though, have recalled for me the politics of charisma that wrecked Arab and Muslim societies. A leader does not have to say much, or be much. The crowd is left to its most powerful possession—its imagination.

Is a Split in the GOP Inevitable? by Deal W. Hudson
The bright light of Palin’s comet seemed out of sync with the course set by McCain’s advisers…the inability of the McCain campaign to connect with the 30,000,000 religious conservative voters on their own terms. Palin understood from the beginning that this election was about the culture wars with a capital “C,” and for this she has been accused of being a “whack job” and “going rogue” by another unnamed McCain adviser. But religious conservatives supporting the GOP ticket haven’t seen Palin’s campaign as being disconnected from McCain’s; in their view, Palin complemented McCain and gave the campaign a message that had been missing, or had been unnecessarily soft-pedaled. While Palin made religious conservatives comfortable with McCain, the leaks coming out of the McCain camp about Palin betray their discomfort with religious conservatives. The base of the party will not accept anything less than leadership committed to social issues and someone who will embrace, rather than tolerate, their presence. Without that leadership, these voters who have been the backbone of the GOP since the early 1980s will look for other avenues to fight the culture wars over the protection of life and the family.

The Road From Wasilla: An Old Abortion Fight Revisited
In 1992, a coalition of some 20 evangelical churches in Alaska’s Matanuska-Susitna Valley — including the Wasilla Assembly of God Church, where Ms. Palin was baptized at age 12 — captured control of the operating board of the community’s Valley Hospital. The new board promptly voted to bar doctors from performing abortions at the hospital with limited exceptions for cases of rape, incest, dire medical necessity or where a doctor documents “the fetus has a condition that is incompatible with life.”

Why Some ‘Born-Again’ Christians are Backing Obama
Born-again Christians voting for Obama say they are backing the Illinois senator because they believe he will do a better job restoring America’s reputation and handling the economy and agree with his stance on the Iraq War.

The Bishops’ Futile Election Strategy – NCR dissident Catholic newspaper
Cycle after cycle they have promulgated the same message: Abortion trumps all other issues
Certainly the conduct of many of the bishops this election cycle has diminished the significance of abortion and undermined the importance of the rest of the Catholic social agenda by turning the abortion issue into a partisan rallying cry.
