WASHINGTON, D.C., May 4, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The U.S. House of Representatives approved by a wide margin a bill to permanently implement the marriage penalty tax cut, exempting married couples from an unfair higher taxation rate.  The bill, “The Marriage Penalty Tax,” permanently enshrines a tax-cut supported by U.S. President George W. Bush, which mandates changes to the tax law. Under current tax rules, U.S. couples pay less tax if filing individually rather than as a couple.

The measure passed in the house by a vote of 323-95. It has yet to be approved in the Senate.  Sponsor of the bill, Rep. Jim Gerlach (R-PA), told Talon News that he hopes the change will make taxation fairer for families stating, “married couples filing their income taxes are not going to be penalized for the simple fact that they are married.”  Read the Talon News coverage: https://www.talonnews.com/news/2004/may/0503_marriage_tax_cut.shtml
