WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (LSN)  After praising “successes” in the Chinese “family planning” (one-child policy) programme, Undersecretary of State for Global Affairs Frank Loy promised to make restoration of support for the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) a top priority.  In October, the population control arm of the UN lost all of its funding from the United States. The $20 million cut, implemented by Congress as part of the federal budget, represented seven per cent of the UNFPA funding. The final straw for Congress was the UNFPA’s support of Chinese population control programs. Last year UNFPA began a new $5-million program in China, home of the repressive ‘one-child policy’ that punishes parents who have more than a single child.
