NEW YORK, May 21 (LSN) – According to a report released today by the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (CAFHRI), the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee will halt US ratification of the International Criminal Court (ICC). CAFHRI reports that the lead lobbyists fighting the ICC in the US, the Catholic Alliance, announced today that “each Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee is now committed to killing this treaty.”  The proposed strategy for effecting the ICC is by international treaty which, in the US would require the signature of the President as well as Senate approval. Senate consideration of the ICC could only come after the endorsement of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  While the news is very positive for the US, the UN does not require US approval to go ahead with the establishment of the ICC. Further, alternative methods to set up the ICC such as an amendment to the UN Charter are also being considered.
