WASHINGTON, July 27, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Yesterday the Senate Appropriations Committee moved to reinstate funding for groups which lobby for and perform abortion overseas. The committee approved without challenge a Democrat-sponsored amendment to a foreign aid bill which would overturn Bush’s Mexico City policy.

A Republican aide explained the no contest allowance of the amendment, by Democrats Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont and Barbara A. Mikulski of Maryland, saying the Republicans would have lost a vote in the committee. “Rather than have a vote and lose in committee, the decision was made to fight this out later,” the aide told the Washington Post.
