WASHINGTON, June 19, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The US Senate approved two protocols contained within the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), rejecting other parts of the convention that were disrespectful of life and family.  The CRC has come under fire by the Bush administration for its promotion of abortion under the guise of “reproductive health services” and its placing the rights of children over those of parents.  The Senate approved the Protocol on the Sale of Children which criminalizes such activities as the outright sale of children, pornography and the prostitution of children. Also approved was the Child Soldiers Protocol, which addresses the forced military conscription of children -some as young as seven years old.  A Senate source told LifeSite that the deliberations within the Senate were in no way to be associated with approval of the CRC.  During the deliberations the Senior Republican on the Senate, Jesse Helms, said, “I will seek assurances that this Protocol … will not give legal recognition to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.”
