VATICAN, May 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) – In a letter signed by the pope, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith (CDF) has censured Rev. Marciano Vidal, 64, a professor of moral theology in Spain for his writings claiming falsely that the morning after pill and other such methods which intervene after fertilization and before implantation are not abortifacient. Also problematic for the Vatican were Vidal’s writings suggesting that voluntary sterilization, masturbation, homosexual sex, and in-vitro fertilization are not necessarily wrong.

Vidal, professor at Spain’s Higher Institute for Moral Sciences and a professor of moral theology at the Pontifical University in Comillas, has consented to revising some of his works. The CDF which has been reviewing Vidal’s case since 1997 ruled that the books in question “cannot be used for theological formation.”
