ROME, Aug 25 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Among the ongoing responses to the Clinton Administration’s decision to fund more stem cell research from human embryos is that of the Vatican, and it’s not subtle. Bishop Elio Sgreccia, vice-president of the Pontifical Academy for Life, speaking on Vatican Radio rejected the argument that such research has great benefits by stating clearly that “you cannot use the end to justify the means! We know that morality requires us to seek appropriate ends through appropriate means.”

When the talk show host noted that the American government was going to maintain the prohibition against directly financing operations to destroy human embryos with public funds, he was emphatic: “That is hypocrisy!” Regardless of the mechanics of the proposal, human embryos are still going to be destroyed, even though they may be the extraneous beings produced by way of infertility treatment.

A document released by the Academy several hours after the announcement by America’s National Institutes of Health “states, as a scientifically proven fact, the possibility of using adult stem cells to obtain the same medical objectives,” reported Zenit news service yesterday. “This way is indicated as being genuinely respectful of human dignity and, therefore, as the most appropriate to benefit from the great promises of scientific research in this area.”
