ROME, June 12, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Vatican’s daily newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano has issued a strong condemnation of the initiative of the Tuscany region to publicly fund hormonal treatments for so-called “sex change” operations. The procedure, known to Catholic health professionals as a form of pharmaceutical and surgical self-mutilation, has been funded by the Italian public health system for some years
The paper said that the move was “unbelievable” in the face of the long waitlists and lack of staff in the region—common problems in most socialized medical systems. L’Osservatore Romano also pointed to some of Tuscany’s other social innovations including being “the first to recognize in its regional statutes alternative forms of living together, as opposed to simply marriage,” and the first to distribute the deadly abortion drug, RU-486 without previous tests.
