ROME, July 21, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, has joined the chorus of Catholic voices condemning the imposition of homosexual “marriage” in Canada. Associated Press quotes the paper’s editorial as saying, “‘The distortion of God’s plan for the family continues’, said L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican daily…‘In Canada, homosexual unions have become equal to marriage.’”

This follows comments from the Canadian bishops organization thatÂwarned repeatedly that the imposition of the new law would also pit religious freedom against the gay rights agenda in Parliament and the Courts. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) called on Canadians to continue to oppose the new law, saying they must “ensure that all provincial and territorial regulations on the solemnization of marriages provide full protection for freedom of conscience and religion, as guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

When the bill passed the Commons earlier this month, L’Osservatore Romano characterized the move and the similar decision by Spain’s parliament as “violent attacks aimed at the natural family—based on a union between a man and a woman.”
