VATICAN CITY, Nov 12 (LSN) Responding to dissident theologians who have attacked the indissolubility of marriage, L’Osservatore Romano, the official newspaper of the Vatican said yesterday that “A ratified and consummated marriage cannot be dissolved by any human authority or for any cause except death.” Some modernists were suggesting that the pope had the authority to dissolve a marriage for instance by legitimizing civil divorces.  The article, covered by Zenit news, clarified that the pronouncement of nullity (annulment) happens only where “by demonstrated causes, the authorities of the Church witness to the fact that there never was a genuine marriage because it took place under threat, ignorance or incapacity.”
