VATICAN CITY, Dec 8, 2000 (LSN.ca) – Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano has publicly voiced support for allowing parents choice in the education of their children through the use of school vouchers. Zenit News reports that during a meeting with the Catholic Union of Secondary School Teachers yesterday, the cardinal said it was a “good idea,” to have such legislation.

The debate over school vouchers has often heard the proponents of “public” education fear mongering that a system of vouchers would destroy the school system. In fact, a system of vouchers would give parents the power to insist on an education that would best benefit their children rather than being forced to accept a school where the lowest common denominator prevails. Catholic bishops in the US and Canada have also backed systems such as vouchers which would allow funding for religious schooling.
