INDIANAPOLIS, March 23, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Indianapolis Colts’ coach Tony Dungy, who led his team to a 29-17 win in the Super Bowl XLI, has announced his support for a bill that would ban “gay marriage” in Illinois.
Dungy gave witness to his faith at a March 20 banquet organized by a pro-family organization, Indiana Family Institute where he was given the “Friend of Family” award for his strong Christian example.
He said at the banquet that he supported the Institute’s efforts to amend the Indiana constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman.
“I appreciate the stance they’re taking, and I embrace that stance,” Dungy told banquet the crowd of about 700, that his comments should not be considered gay-bashing.
“We’re not trying to downgrade anyone else. But we’re trying to promote the family—family values the Lord’s way,” Dungy said.
After his team’s Super Bowl win, Dungy was asked by media about the significance of the fact that the coaches of both opposing teams at the Super Bowl were African Americans. He replied that “more than anything…not only the first two African-Americans, but Christian coaches showing that you can win doing it the Lord’s way. And we’re more proud of that.”
