FAIRFAX, VA, July 25, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new online video shows students at George Mason University signing a conservative's mock petition to legalize “fourth trimester abortions.”

Dan Joseph, a reporter for Brent Bozell's Media Research Center, took his clipboard and the phony motion to the Fairfax campus to gauge students' reaction.

“Currently fourth trimester abortions are illegal in all 50 states,” he said to students attending summer classes at the D.C.-area university.

More than a dozen students signed on to the measure, which would legalize infanticide, within one hour. A young woman in a pink short told Joseph “I just had a baby three months ago,” as she signed the petition.

Few of the students in the elite institution seemed to understand they had agreed a mother should be able to kill her newborn baby.

As Joseph spoke of women's rights, male students replied the measure was “cool.”

“We believe it's a child and a choice,” he said.

Although Joseph circulated his petition in jest, there is evidence that infanticide is routinely practiced and gaining growing support in pro-abortion circles. Last February, bioethicists Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva wrote an essay defending infanticide for the Journal of Medical Ethics entitled, “After-birth abortion: why should the baby live?” Notorious Princeton professor Peter Singer has long defended infanticide, while in The Netherlands infanticide is currently legal and routinely practiced on disabled children under the Groningen Protocol.

This April Alissa LaPolt Snow, a lobbyist for Planned Parenthood, defended post-birth abortions in testimony before the Florida legislature. When asked what a doctor should do if a baby were born alive during an abortion procedure, LaPolt Snow replied, “We believe that any decision that’s made should be left up to the woman, her family, and the physician.”

Recent cases have proven the murder of newborns is not merely a hypothetical issue. A jury convicted Dr. Kermit Gosnell of murdering three newborns, though his staff says he performed the same “snipping” of infants' spines “hundreds” of times. Houston abortionist Dr. Douglas Karpen stands accused of performing even more gruesome acts to newborns, including twisting their heads off with his bare hands.

Observers say their actions, once an anomaly, are becoming increasingly common among abortionists. Mark Crutcher of Life Dynamics recently said, “I can tell you from experience, being undercover in the abortion industry that this issue of babies being born alive is an exploding situation in that industry.”

Not everyone fell for Dan Joseph's ruse. A few students who caught on to him shook their heads or walked away. One young man invited Joseph, whom he believed to be a true supporter of abortion-on-demand, to a campus Bible study.

After an hour, Joseph had collected 14 signatures, despite the fact that the school is currently on summer break.

“If you are a pro-choice activist, you have to be pretty happy about this many people supporting this cause,” Joseph concluded.
