THE STRAIGHT STORY –  Crusty, 73 year old Alvin Straight, played by deceased Canadian actor Richard Farnsworth (Anne of Green Gables), decides he must visit his sick, estranged brother. He drives his old, ride-on lawnmower several hundred miles through the countryside to his brother’s home. A very different movie based on a true story. Children and young adults will find this one far too slow. Mature, not meaning just old, adults will savour the beauty, peace and handling of difficult life realities in the movie and its lessons in charity, understanding and especially forgiveness. Some mild profanity.  SERGEANT YORK – Starring Gary Cooper. A 1941 academy award winner. Based on the true story of Alvin York, the number one and unlikely hero of the first world war who single-handedly captured 132 German soldiers. But that’s only part of the story. York was a hell-raiser from the backwoods of the Tennessee mountains who experienced spiritual awakening before being drafted into the army. The beginning hour makes you think you’ve got the wrong movie, but it sets the stage for a moving courtship and York’s witness to convictions, courage, loyalty and powerful simplicity of spirit. Thought provoking arguments about pacifism (York was a pacifist). Surprisingly, all ages will enjoy this, even today.
