WINCHESTER, Virginia, August 25, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Lisa Miller-Jenkins and Janet Miller-Jenkins entered into a civil union in Vermont four years ago and Lisa had a child by artificial insemination, but the lesbian couple did not live happily ever after; Lisa Miller-Jenkins and Janet Miller-Jenkins are now separated and involved in a legal battle over legal custody of two-year-old Isabella Miller-Jenkins. Frederick County Circuit Judge John Prosser ruled yesterday that same-sex civil unions in Vermont do not bestow parental rights. Vermont allowed same-sex unions in 2000, while Virginia enacted a statute last year that makes such unions void. Prosser refused Janet Miller-Jenkins’ request for equal custody, giving full custody instead to the child’s biological mother, who is a Virginia resident. Another legal battle between the two women is now taking place in Vermont courts.
